MATCH REVIEW: Danish side beats FTC Rail-Cargo Hungaria in first leg of Women's Cup Winners' Cup Quarter-final
Viborg head for semi-final after 40:32 win
Viborg HK are very close to reaching the semi-final of the Women's Cup Winners' Cup after defeating FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria 40:32 at home in the first leg of the two teams' quarter-final encounter on Monday evening.
The start was equal, but despite of missing five players due to injury, Viborg managed work up a solid lead as the match progressed.
On the other side, FTC-Rail Cargo's unlucky series of playing Danish teams this season continued.
In autumn the Hungarian side lost 23:32 away and 25:26 at home against FC Midtjylland in the group phase of the Women's EHF Champions League.
Before the match their head coach Christian Dalmose had pointed out the visitors as clear favourites.
After an equal start, however, Viborg dominated the match in Viborg Stadionhal completely and after a four-goal lead at half-time, the hosts increased their lead even further throughout the last 30 minutes, during Viborg were even leading with 10 goals a couple of times.
"We managed to put them under pressure in more or less all aspects of the game, and we made a fantastic effort with the only nine players who were fit," Viborg´s right back Louise Burgaard told Danish TV after the match.
"We realise, of course, that we are far from being in the semi-final yet, but we have put ourselves in a great position," the Danish international added.
