Fridrikas, Popovic and Viborg on top

Since the implementation of the Women’s EHF Champions League in the 1993/94 season, only four teams became multiple winners of the competition, with Hypo Niederösterreich on top with four trophies, followed by the Danish sides Slagelse and Viborg (each three) and Krim Ljubljana (two). So in contrast to the Men’s Champions League, where FC Barcelona took seven of 20 titles, the variety is much bigger.

So it’s no surprise that also the number of multiple winners from the players side is lower than in the men’s competition. Compared to 58 male players, who have won two or more titles, the number of women is only 50.

Two players are outstanding in this ranking with six trophies on their tally each: Austrian Ausra Fridrikas and Montenegrin Bojana Popovic – and both even celebrated together in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons, when they were part of the successful Slagelse team.

Only three players (Fridrikas, Rima Sypkus and Tanja Dshandshagava) were part of all four victorious Hypo squads, which took the titles in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 2000. While six players won three trophies with Viborg, only two (Popovic and Mette Melgaard) were part of all three Slagelse teams to win the title.

An in the long list of those players, there’s only one to raise the trophy three straight times: Romanian goalkeeper Luminita Hutupan (Dinu), who took the title in 2001 (Krim), 2002 (Skopje) and 2003 (Krim).

Regarding the clubs represented in this list of multiple success, Viborg are on top with 16 players, followed by Hypo (15), Slagelse (13) and Krim (8).

And by looking upon the first MVM Women’s EHF FINAL4 in Budapest (3/4 May) three players of defending champions Györ are already on the list of multiple winners: The Norwegians Katrine Lunde-Haraldsen (3 titles), and Heidi Löke (2) and Montenegrin Katarina Bulatovic (2). Since 2010, no team managed to defend their title, and since 2010 with four different teams rose the trophy in the end.
