Hungary first through to the semi-finals

There was plenty of excitement and drama on Tuesday, as the top eight sides at the Men’s 18 EHF EURO went into battle in the main round.

Perhaps the most notable result of the day was Hungary’s 30:20 win over Germany in Group 2. Hungary’s player of the match Gergely Rozsavölgyi and his goalkeeping prowess proved to be the difference and the win guaranteed them a place in Friday’s semi-finals.

As for Germany’s players, a quick regrouping is essential if they wish to progress, as they have a straight shootout against France, victorious against Poland 34:18 in the group’s other encounter.

Group 1 is less straightforward, but is looking good for Spain after a 26:20 win over Sweden. After racing into a 13:8 half-time lead, the Spaniards never looked threatened and they sit atop the group alone on four points.

The most thrilling of the main round games was the meeting of Switzerland and Denmark. The Danes held narrow leads throughout the game, but a Florian Leitner goal in the dying seconds gave Switzerland the win and a hope of reaching the last four going into their game with Spain on Wednesday afternoon.

In the intermediate round, there were wins for Iceland and FYR Macedonia in Group 1, while Croatia and Belarus shared the points with a 31:31 draw, leaving both sides ahead of Romania (30:25 over Czech Republic) in Group 2.
