Plock take surprise point from thriller in Denmark

Orlen Wisla Plock returned from their VELUX EHF Champions League Group B trip to unbeaten KIF Kolding Kobenhavn with a dramatic 30:30 draw on Sunday.

The Polish club had led 27:22, but still left celebrating a point which improves their chances of reaching the last 16 following a thrilling finale.

GROUP B
KIF Kolding Kobenhavn (DEN) vs Orlen Wisla Plock (POL) 30:30 (14:14)

Orlen Wilsa Plock won their first point in eight EHF Champions League games against KIF Kolding Kobenhavn after a nail-biting finish in Brondby.

There was another surprise earlier in the afternoon as Kim Andersson appeared on Kolding's team sheet, despite having broken a knuckle on his right hand in the first meeting between these teams 10 days ago.

But, sporting a special support on his hand, the 32-year-old right back was passed fit to play his part in Kolding’s attack while substituted in defence.

It took the Swedish star some time to get going when it came to shooting, but he made up for it with a series of smart assists for his teammates.

Still, Plock were the dominant force for much of the first half.

The hosts trailed by between one and three goals for much of the half and would have been happy to tie it up at 14 at half-time.

Plock coach Manuel Cadenas had sprung a selection shock of his own by starting 20-year-old Adam Morawski in goal, and the keeper repaid his coach’s faith with a string of impressive saves.

At the other end of the court, Plock had success once again in finding their line player Kamil Syprzak who caused the Kolding defence constant problems.

This enabled Plock to continue their dominance in the second half, as they established a 27:22 lead, before Kolding’s experience, coupled with the visitors’ nerves, brought the home team back into the game.

Kolding even got themselves back in front in the closing stages of a breathless encounter but in the end both sides had to settle for a draw.

The point put Kolding on top of Group B with 10 points, at least temporarily, with FC Barcelona due to face SG Flensburg-Handewitt later Sunday while Plock remain in fourth position with five points from six games.
