EHF Young Reporters prepare for Women’s EHF EURO 2014

Two weeks out of the Women’s EHF EURO 2014 the next intake of young reporters to join the EHF Media Team at the final tournament in Hungary and Croatia gathered in Vienna to gear up for the tasks ahead.

Following the success of the first young reporters’ team which worked at the Men’s EHF EURO 2014 back in January, the EHF Media and Communications Department had again asked for applicants.

More than 70 people applied, out of which the successful eight now attended a pre-tournament workshop.

New heights

With EHF’s aim to lift the coverage of the EHF EURO events to new heights, the workshop’s topic was set to mobile reporting with German coach Marcus Bösch providing the participants with insights into the field and also into some of the latest smartphone and tablet applications for mobile reporting, such as Hyperlapse by Instagram, Bobler and Vine.

"I learnt a lot about mobile journalism and the apps I can use to generate digital content in only three days," said Zsanett Furka from Hungary.

"It was a perfect combination of informative presentation, demonstration and creative practical sessions.

"Marcus seemed to be a highly experienced professional, who sheared his knowledge about mobile reporting happily with us, and with a good sense of humour."

Matteo Aldamonte, who is already working as the Head of Media for the Italian Handball Federation, added: "My dream is to become a journalist specialised in handball, so I think this is a really good opportunity for me. The workshop in Vienna was a great start.

"I have greatly appreciated the positive atmosphere and the opportunity to test 'in the field' techniques analysed during the workshop."

Fivers invite young reporters to cover league match

After having tested and tried plenty of apps during the workshop’s first part, the young reporters on Saturday afternoon left the EHF Office and went to Vienna handball club Fivers, who supported the workshop, to cover their match against Handball Schwaz from Tyrol.

"I never had a chance to do some photo shooting right at the handball court and it was a new dimension of journalism to me. I could really feel becoming a part of that match," said Tomislav Lauric from Croatia.

"I've never been able to focus so much on players emotions during the match and now I had a chance to see how real and 'raw' they are - my perspective of handball changed a bit after this experience for sure."

All workshop results, including a match report shot and edited only with a tablet and an audio slideshow, are available on ehfeuro2014.tumblr.com.

The site will also serve as the blog for all young reporters during the EHF EURO 2014 in Hungary and Croatia.
