NEWS REPORT: Danish club part ways with head coach a day before crucial Women’s EHF Champions League match
Viborg sack Christian Dalmose
One day before Viborg HK play their crucial away game against Metz Handball in the Women’s EHF Champions League, the club has decided to end their cooperation with head coach Christian Dalmose with immediate effect.
“The reason for this step is the fact that a gap has appeared between the head coach and the players lately, and it has turned out that it has not been possible to repair this gap,” Viborg director Niolai Norup explained on Saturday.
The sacking, which was decided by the board of directors in the club Saturday morning, comes after the injury handicapped Viborg team has lost five games in a row – two in the main round of the Champions League and three in the Danish league.
“We realise that it has been a difficult season for Christian and the girls, and that has made the gap deeper,” Nikolai Norup said.
Friis Hansen takes over
In place of Christian Dalmose will be experienced coach Lars Friis Hansen, who has been in the club before, and he will be in charge of the Viborg team in France this Sunday.
“We are fortunate that we have been able to find someone who could take over the job as head coach with such short notice.
“Soon, we will announce who is going to take over the job as head coach for the rest of the season,” Nikolai Norup said.
Viborg visit Metz Handball at Les Arenes de Metz in Group 2 of the main round on Sunday at 16:50 hrs local time.
Viborg are currently third in the group with five points, while Metz and HCM Baia Mare are right behind them on four points each.
