Stefansson set for surprise comeback with Kolding Kobenhavn

Olafur Stefansson, often considered in the past as the best right back in the world, appears to be heading for a surprising comeback to international handball at the age of 41.

In the coming days, Stefansson will train with KIF Kolding Kobenhavn, and if the trial turns out to be of satisfaction for both parties, the Danish champions are planning to make use of Stefansson in their upcoming VELUX EHF Champions League Last 16 matches against Zagreb.

He will have the first training session with his potential new teammates on Thursday.

“We have been acting fast, as the opportunity turned up. We have been able to finance it thanks to our good partners, should it become reality,” KIF director Jens Boesen told the club’s official website.

Previous experience in Denmark

Olafur Stefansson last played in 2013, when he represented Lakhwiya Sports Club in Qatar, while his most recent appearances in Europe were with AG Kobenhavn, with whom he reached the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in the 2011/12 season.

Recently, the experienced right back has not been playing competitively and therefore there is quite some excitement in Kolding Kobenhavn to see how his form is these days.

The reason why Olafur Stefansson is suddenly needed by KIF Kolding Kobenhavn is the ongoing shoulder problem suffered by their Swedish right back Kim Andersson, who has seen his ability to shoot restricted since returning from the World Championship in Qatar.

“If Olafur turns out to be fit, and he can contribute of the court, it is obviously a golden opportunity for us to sign him, seeing as Kim Andersson can unfortunately not fully play,” Jens Boesen said.

If KIF do sign Olafur Stefansson, he will only be available to the team in Europe, as he is not eligible for the Danish league or the Danish Cup due to the transfer window closing for both competitions on 1 February.
