Byasen and Hypo ready for remake
«Go back »Print Version

ROUND PREVIEW: Hypo Niederösterreich are seeking revenge for quarter-final defeat in Norway last year.

Byasen and Hypo ready for remake

Only three quarter-finals are on the schedule for the Women's Cup Winners' Cup this weekend, as one of the quarter-final ties, the one between Zvezda Zvenigorod and Fleury Loiret Handball is being played as a double-header next weekend.

Last season, Byasen Trondheim and Hypo Niederösterreich met in the quarter-finals of the Women's Cup Winners' Cup, with a clear aggregate win for Byasen as the outcome.

On that occasion, however, both matches were played in Norway. This time, Byasen only have the home advantage in the first leg which is being played in the Trondheim Spektrum on late Saturday afternoon.

The return match is taking place in the Südstadt of Vienna next Saturday, and optimism seems to rule by the Austrian record champions ahead of the renewed meeting with Byasen.

“The Norwegian team is a task we should be able to solve,” said Hypo coach Feri Kovacs, referring to the fact that Byasen do not seem to be at the same strength as when they sent Hypo out last year.

Two other teams with broken Women's EHF Champions League dreams behind them are meeting in Globus Hall of Lublin on Saturday.

MKS Selgros Lublin had to leave the tournament after the group phase, while their visitors FC Midtjylland did not manage to qualify for the competition this season.

Instead, both teams are seeking their success in the Cup Winners' Cup, and it is the Danish team who have the best memories of the most recent meetings between the two teams. Last season, they were in the same group in the Champions League group stage, and both direct matches were won by Midtjylland.

The last tie, of which the first leg is taking place this weekend, is the meeting between FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria and HSG Blomberg-Lippe.
The first match between the two teams is taking place in Budapest on Saturday afternoon.

FTC is yet another team who did not manage to qualify for the Champions League group stage this season, but having won the Cup Winners' Cup in 2011 as well as in 2012, the Hungarian club has proud traditions to defend in this tournament also.
