100 days to go competition

Test your knowledge of the cities that will host the participants of the Men’s EHF EURO 2016 and be in with a chance to win one of 20 pairs of tickets to the opening round of matches.

The prizes are as follows:
Krakow quiz – 5 pairs of tickets to the first day of the EHF EURO 2016 in Krakow (15 January)
Wrocław quiz – 5 pairs of tickets to the first day of the EHF EURO 2016 in Wrocław (16 January)
Katowice quiz – 5 pairs of tickets to the first day of the EHF EURO 2016 in Katowice (15 January)
Gdańsk quiz – 5 pairs of tickets to the first day of the EHF EURO 2016 in Gdańsk (16 January)

The winners of the contest will be those who answer the questions correctly in the shortest amount of time. Remember: one city – one contest. Winners of a contest in one Host City will not be eligible to win prizes in the remaining three contests.

Please send your answers – to only one set of questions – to konkurs@zprp.org.pl. The deadline to send in your answers is Sunday, 11 October. The names of the winners will be announced on Wednesday, 14 October.

KRAKOW

1. He was born in June 1838 in Krakow, as the ninth child in his family. He always remained closely tied to the Krak’s Town – he studied here at the Academy of Fine Arts, of which he was later, the director. Among his students were the great representatives of Young Poland – Józef Mehoffer, Stanisław Wyspiański and Maurycy Gottlieb. He is known as the most prominent painter in Polish history. Who is he?

2. Krakow is commonly known as the city of Polish kings. This is because in the past, the capital of the Małopolska was the site of coronations of Polish rulers, as well as the residence of the royal court. For over 500 years, Krakow was also the capital of the country. What year did the city lose its status to Warsaw?

3. During EHF EURO 2016, 19 matches will take place in Krakow. The Polish representation will face their opponents here; the city will also be the site of the final matches that will determine the top three teams of the tournament. The site of the matches will the TAURON Arena Krakow, which was opened for use in May 2014. The facility was built in a park. What is the name of the park and in which district of Krakow is it located in?

4. In May 2015, the Polish handball representation faced off with Romania and Egypt at the TAURON Arena Krakow, as part of the May Tournament. For the white-and-red team, this was their first appearance in Krak’s Town in a very long time. How many years had it been since their previous match in the capital of Małopolska?

5. He arrived in Krakow as a 19-year-old and made his debut in the Ekstraklasa wearing the colours of local team – Hutnik. He was a member of the team from Małopolska for two seasons, during which he was recruited to the national team. In 1999, due to the financial problems of the club, he moved to Warszawianka; four years later, he moved abroad. Despite the years passing by, he is still a mainstay of the national team, with which he has won three world championship medals. Who is the handball player?

WROCŁAW

1. He was born in October 1921 in Radomsko, and from 1968, for over 40 years, he was connected with Wrocław. He lived and worked in the city. He was one of the most frequently translated Polish author – his books have been published in 49 languages. He debuted in 1944 with the volume Forest Echoes, in 1999 received the Nike Literary Award for the poetry tome Mother Departs. He died in April 2014 in Wrocław. Who is he?

2. Located in Wrocław’s Zalesie estate is the Olympic Stadium, which is the central part of a sports facilities complex. It was built in the 1920s. Despite its current name, it was suitable for events on a smaller scale than the Olympic Games. Currently, the stadium can accommodate approx. 11 thousand fans in its seats. Who was the architect who designed it?

3. Since 2005, small statues of dwarves have been appearing in Wrocław. Currently, they are an integral part of the urban space and one of the city’s attractions. Special tours that visit the dwarves are organised, during which tourists can combine sightseeing in Wrocław with a search for the figures. The dwarves are connected with a movement that originated in the 1980s. What is the name of the movement?

4. In May and June 2008, Wrocław was the host to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games qualification tournament. Besides the Polish team, three other national teams took part in the tournament. List the teams.

5. Śląsk Wrocław is the handball team with the most wins in Polish history. In 2002, at the age of only 19, a young back-court player joined the Lower Silesian Team. In three seasons of playing in the club’s colours, he won two bronze medals in the Polish championships, as well as making his debut in the national team. Currently, he is one of the key members of the Polish national team, with which he has won three world championship medals. Who is he?

KATOWICE

1. In 1906, a world-famous physicist was born in Katowice, one of only two women who received the Nobel Prize in the discipline. When she was three years old, she and her family left Upper Silesia and moved to Göttingen, which she left in 1930 to move to the United States. In 1963, she received the Nobel Prize for proposing the nuclear shell model of the atomic nucleus. Who was she?

2. The coat of arms of the City of Katowice shows an anvil with a forging hammer, placed on a wooden beam. The background of the coat of arms is gold and blue. The second colour has a symbolic meaning. What is it?

3. In June 2012 in Katowice, the men’s handball Polish national team faced off with Lithuania in the qualification play-off for the 2013 World Championship in Spain. During the break in the match, thanks were given to Bogdan Wenta for his long-term work with the team. The coach led the Polish team to two world championship medals. What training duo coached the Poles in the match with Lithuania?

4. Clubs from Katowice have taken the Polish championship ten times, both in women’s and men’s handball (11-person and 7-person teams). All of these successes are in the distant past, however, since the last triumph of AZS Katowice took place over 50 years ago (in 1964). AZS Katowice is, however, not the one with the most titles. Which team holds the most titles?

5. The Spodek arena will be one of four EHF EURO 2016 sites. Group B teams – Croatia, Iceland, Belarus and Norway – will play their matches here. The complex was opened in 1971 and was designed by three architects. Name at least two of them.

GDAŃSK

1. He was born in 1611 in Gdańsk in a family that had been brewers for generations. He, however, was interested in mathematics, astronomy and drawing. He studied in the Netherlands, England and France. From 1634 until the end of his life, he lived in Gdańsk again. He constructed and built many unique instruments for astronomical observation, known to us from illustrations in his works. He printed his works in his own printing house. He named one of the constellations he discovered the “Sobieski’s Shield”. Who was he?

2. ERGO ARENA will be one of the sites of the EHF EURO 2016. Group D teams – Denmark, Hungary, Russia and Montenegro – will play their matches here. The arena is located at the border of Gdańsk and Sopot. The site was officially opened during a friendly Poland-Brazil volleyball match. Since that event, just over five years have passed. What was the exact date of the opening of the arena?

3. Situated on Long Market (Długi Targ), in the most representative parts of Gdańsk, just before the entrance to Artus Court (Dwór Artusa), is a fountain. Its construction was finished in 1633, and the initiators of the project were Mayor Barthell Schachtmann and the city council. Currently, it is one of the most recognisable monuments of Gdańsk. The fountain is topped with a statue of a Roman god. What is the deity’s name?

4. In April 2013, the Polish men’s national team faced off with Sweden at the ERGO ARENA as part of the 2014 European Championship eliminations. The match was met with great interest and attracted a record-breaking number of fans to the stands. How many people watched the Poland-Sweden match at the Gdańsk arena? You can be off by 100 people.

5. He played over 250 matches in the colours of the Polish national handball team. In 2007, along with the team, he reached second place in the world championship, and two years later won the bronze medal at the championship in Croatia. He is undeniably one of the most outstanding handball players in Polish history. During his career, he played twice for Wybrzeże Gdańsk. Who is he?
