Mighty Midtjylland stun Györ in breathtaking fashion

If their current form is anything to go by, Midtjylland can again be the Women’s EHF Champions League surprise package and reach the EHF FINAL4 as they did in 2014.

A superb weekend of top-drawer European club handball was capped by a true classic as FC Midtjylland saw off Györi Audi ETO.

The shock triumph was all the more remarkable as the Danish side fought back from a 10:6 deficit late in the first half, outscoring their more fancied rivals 12:2 in the next 22 minutes to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

The opening 20 minutes suggested a different outcome as Gyor appeared to be firmly in the driving seat with their Norwegian duo Linn Jorum Sulland and Heidi Loke firing on all cylinders.

Right back Sulland unleashed long-range efforts with ruthless efficiency and evergreen line player Loke was always a handful for her markers on the six-metre line, as the two netted seven of their team’s opening 10 goals.

However, the home side’s attack then came to a screeching halt and Midtjylland launched their epic comeback which turned the high-tempo match on its head.

Driven by new signing Louise Burgaard, who shone with a game-high 8 goals from 13 shots, the visitors wiped out Györ’s lead by half-time and then outclassed the Hungarian giants after the break.

A 7:1 run, peppered by fast breaks and a free-flowing attack which had Györ chasing shadows, propelled Midtjylland to race clear into an 18:12 lead and silence the vociferous home fans.

Burgaard was unstoppable and Stine Jorgensen joined the scoring party, while everything Györ threw at the visitors seemed to be hitting a wall.

Loke fizzed out of the game in the second half after a bright opening, finishing with a modest three goals from eight shots, as Györ relied solely on playmaker Anita Gorbicz who scored five, all of them in the second half.

Jorgensen chipped in with six for Midtjylland and Johanna Ahlm added four, sending the Danish side to the top of the group with two impressive wins from as many games.
