Györ’s roller coaster will peak high

FEATURE: Coach Ambros Martin thinks it is normal to feel unbalanced when you are working on building a new team and believes Györ are still a force to be reckoned with

Györ’s roller coaster will peak high

Ambros Martin claims his Györ team is as strong as the one that once ruled the Women’s EHF Champions League, but they need more time.

The Spanish mastermind claims Györ will be ready by the time the medals are being handed out.

"Even when we beat Vardar in Skopje and had an outstanding performance we were aware that there was still a lot of work ahead of us.

"It is true we had a bad day against Midtjylland but we are not broken by the defeat.

"This happens at this stage of re-building,” the Spanish coach told ehfcl.com.

After the massive victory in Skopje a lot of fans were shocked to see their team go down against Midtjylland, but Martin anticipated ups and downs.

"It is a new team with a lot of new players not to mention those who came back after almost a year of absence.

True colours

So which one is the true face of Györ?

The unstoppoble machine we saw at Vardar or the easily confused, sometimes hapless team that lost to the Cup Winners’ Cup holders?

"I believe we are closer to the former. We obviously cannot always play at that level just yet but we are definitely not as bad as we were against Midtjylland.

"That was an unlucky game against a great opponent, who made clever use of our mistakes.”

Patience is key

About a year ago Györ lost the head of their attacks (Anita Görbicz) and a head of their defense (Eduarda Amorim) within three weeks and this proved to be the turning point of the season for the reigning champions.

"I am happy that both of them are back but they will need time to find the rhythm of their game especially in the Champions League.

"We are patient as they need time to reach their level again, but it is comforting to have such world class talents back in your roster.

"When medals are up for grabs in spring they will be ready to fight for them.”

The fierces opponents

Two rounds have been played and picture is clearer now, but Martin does not care about the form of the other teams:

"I saw some games, yes, but neither results or form are important as far as having a chance of medals when spring rolls around.

"It is a long season, and a lot of things will happen before the medals are won.”

"Take a look at us last year, we started brilliantly but when injuries hit us hard we even failed to qualify for the FINAL4.

"On the other hand, Vardar started badly and still made it to Budapest.

It is impossible to predict and I am only concerned about my own team. If you look too far ahead, you might fall.”
