Mehmedovic seeks new challenge abroad

In January Buducnost announced the signing of new one-year contracts with Katarina Bulatovic, Cristina Neagu, Dragana Cvijic, Suzana Lazovic and Biljana Pavicevic.

In February Kinga Achruk agreed to stay in Podgorica for another year, while Milena Raicevic, Marta Zderic, Radmila Petrovic, along with youngers Djurdjina Jaukovic, Djurdjina Malovic, Ema Ramusovic, Vanesa Agovic, Matea Pletikosic, Jovana Kovacevic, Itana Cavlovic, Ljubica Nenezic, Ivona Pavicevic, Ana Rajkovic and Dijana Ujkic already had valid contracts for the next season(s).

One name was missing, and Buducnost fans were impatient to know what was going on with Majda Mehmedovic.

A two-time EHF Champions League winner, European Champion and Olympic silver medallist, the 25-year old left wing has officially revealed that she will not renew her contract and leave Podgorica at the end of season.

“Every person, regardless of the job, has its own vision. I had a plan to accomplish myself as a Buducnost player, and then to leave Montenegro for a few years and try out to see what it’s like to be a foreign player,” Mehmedovic said.

“I hope I will fulfill my goal, but I hope to end my career in Buducnost. It’s my desire.”

Mehmedovic came to Buducnost in 2005 from Bar, and will leave Podgorica after 11 years.

“I love Buducnost and Podgorica, I live for the club, where I grew up as a player and woman. Therefore it was a difficult decision, but I want to try something new,” she added.

Rumours will have her joining CSM Bucuresti this summer, but Mehmedovic has not signed a contract with any club yet.

“Realistically it is hard to find a better club then Buducnost, who are a top team,” Mehmedovic said. “In my opinion Buducnost deserve to play the WOMEN’S EHF FINAL4 every year. But I want to try myself at a new club. No matter I know that my new club, perhaps, will not beat Buducnost. On the one hand I’m happy, on the other I am sorry to leave everything but I have to fulfil my wish.”

After their 25:22 win over Györi Audi ETO KC last weekend, Buducnost are just two points away from securing the first spot in Group 2.

“The atmosphere in the Morača hall was beautiful, the game also,” Mehmedovic said. “I am glad that we defeated the great team of Györi Audi ETO KC, who, along with us, are playing the best defence and are favourite to reach the final of the Champions League.”

On Sunday in Skopje, Buducnost will play another derby, against Vardar, who are still waiting for their first Champions League win against the champion from Montenegro after four defeats and one draw so far.

“It will be really difficult for them. I think Vardar always play better against other teams than against us,” Mehmedovic concluded.
