Women’s 17 EHF EURO 2017 set to throw-off

The action-packed summer of European youth events continues as the Women’s 17 EHF EURO throws-off tomorrow in Slovakia.

All games of the Women’s 17 EHF EURO will be live on ehfTV.

Sixteen teams will compete from 10-20 August at the tournament in Michalovce in the east of the country. Initially, four groups of four teams each will play in the preliminary round with the top two going into the main round, then semi-finals and final.

Losing teams will play in placement matches. The tournament will be played at the Chemkostav Arena and City Hall. Slovakia also hosted the IHF Women’s Youth World Championship in Bratislava last summer, ensuring a real legacy of youth handball in the country.

“Michalovce has an excellent women’s handball background and was the logical decision,” said President of the Slovak Handball Federation Jaroslav Holeša on the eve of the tournament.

“In co-operation with the City of Michalovce and our partners, there will be a special programme for fans directly in the playing halls – we are welcoming [from the organisation side] 400 people from all over the Europe and I truly believe we will show ourselves in the best possible light and Slovaks will prove that they are true hosts."

The Women’s 17 EHF EURO has been a fixture in the European handball calendar since 1992, when it was originally known as the EHF Women’s Youth Championship.

It debuted in Hungary in the same year, with Hungary taking the honours. The next edition was two years later, in 1994 and then a three-year gap to 1997, in Austria. Since then it has taken place every two years. 2017 will be the 13th edition and the second time Slovakia has hosted it – 10 years after France won gold in 2007.

Denmark are the current holders of the title and equal Russia for the most times won – three.
