Gudmundur Gudmundsson takes over Iceland's national team

Gudmundur Gudmundsson is back. The 57-year-old who led Iceland to their biggest handball successes to date, namely the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games and bronze at EHF EURO 2018, has been named Iceland head coach once more.

Following his stints from 2001 and 2004 and from 2008 to 2012, it is the third time Gudmundsson leads the team. His appointment came just 10 days after the end of the Men's EHF EURO 2018 in Croatia which Iceland exited after the preliminary round.

Gudmundsson succeeds Geir Sveinsson who had been coaching the team since April 2016. He signed a three-year contract with the federation.

In between 2012 and 2018, Gudmundsson led Denmark to gold at the 2016 Olympic Games and, most recently, Bahrain to silver at the Asian Championships. With German side Rhein-Neckar Löwen he won the EHF Cup in 2013.

Gudmundsson's first challenge on the Icelandic bench will be the play-offs to the World Championship 2019 in which Iceland face Lithuania in June.
