Györ agree on Mørk replacement

Györi Audi ETO KC’s ambitions took a hit when they lost their top scorer in the Women’s EHF Champions League, Nora Mørk (49 goals), midway through the season. The title-holders acted fast after Mørk was injured on Monday, and have already agreed on a replacement.

Spanish right back Mireya Gonzalez will join the Hungarian champions on loan for the remainder of the season, providing quality and experience in Mørk’s absence.

Gonzalez will be no stranger to the Hungarian team, as she has represented domestic rivals ERD for the past two seasons, winning the EHF Challenge Cup in 2015.

"It is an honour that my name is associated with Györ. I would like to wish Nora Mørk a speedy recovery,” 26-year-old Gonzalez told Györ’s official website.

“This is a great opportunity for me to do everything I can, and help the team achieve their goals for the season."

Gonzalez is expected to make her debut in the league match against Debrecen on February 14. Györ are also in the process of making her available for the potential Women’s EHF Champions League Quarter-finals.

The three-time Champions League winners are currently second in main round Group 1 with eight points – two less than table leaders CSM.

Meanwhile, the Hungarian giants are facing an injury crisis. Stars Eduarda Amorim and line player Anja Althaus are already off the court in recovery mode, as Mørk becomes the latest big name on their treatment table.

Expected to undergo surgery this week, 26-year-old Mørk is facing a prolonged spell away from the court. Györ’s medical staff confirmed an ACL rupture – a serious knee ligament injury, requiring six to nine months of recovery time following the surgical procedure – effectively ruling the star out for the remainder of the season.

Two-time Women’s EHF Champions League winner (2010/11 and 2016/17) Mørk is no stranger to knee injuries, having undergone no less than six surgeries on her right knee.

The Hungarian powerhouse were cruising to their sixth victory in the Women’s EHF Champions League, against Nykøbing (final result 32:23), when Mørk had to be stretchered off the court midway though the second half.
