Johansson leads Montenegro until 2020

Per Johansson continues to coach Montenegro’s women’s national team, as the Montenegrin federation signed a new contract with the Swedish coach, valid until the end of 2020.

Johansson replaced the long-serving Dragan Adzic in late November 2017 and coached the team at the Women’s World Championship, reaching the quarter-final which Montenegro lost 25:22 against eventual champions France.

The news means that Johansson will also sit on the bench when Montenegro face Poland in rounds 3 and 4 of the Women’s EHF EURO 2018 Qualification at the end of March.

“Thanks for the confidence. I’m proud that Montenegro has chosen me as their head coach for the next three years. I'll do anything to make this a success,” Per Johansson said.

“It feels fantastic and inspiring to get the opportunity to build something good in the long term with this team,” he continued. Besides his national team job, Johansson will also work as an international scout for club side Buducnost.

Initially, Johansson, who won silver with Sweden at the EHF EURO 2010, had signed just a three-week contract, valid only for the World Championship in December in Germany.

The results he achieved within these three weeks – he also brought back stalwarts such Jovanka Radicevic and Katarina Bulatovic, who had been left out in the last period of Adzic’s era – were deemed sufficient to prolong the cooperation.

“Reaching the quarter-finals was a success, and we were close to playing for the medals.

“I'm very happy to have the opportunity to lead Montenegro, I enjoy working with the girls”, Johansson had said at the end of the World Championship.
