Denmark and Switzerland: A perfect partnership

The bid of Denmark and Switzerland to host the Men’s EHF EURO is based on one word: partnership. This idyllic partnership brings together new ideas for the Men’s EHF EURO 2022 or 2024 focused on a new hosting model for smaller nations and opening up development and growth opportunities for all nations.

Four venues are proposed, including the 15,000-capacity Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning (DEN), the brand new 13,500-capacity Royal Arena in Copenhagen (DEN), the 5,000-capacity Ceres Arena in Aarhus (DEN), and the 12,000-capacity Hallenstadion in Zurich (SUI).

The Denmark-Switzerland bid book promises that “nowhere else will European handball have a bigger opportunity to expand and inspire than with this perfect partnership. With Denmark and Switzerland, the Men’s EHF EURO in 2022 or 2024 will ignite a new era driving new and sustainable hosting aspirations for all European Handball nations big and, especially, small.”

Despite their relative small size, the two countries boast over 100,000 active handball players between them and are two of the ‘happiest countries in the world’, according to the ‘UN’s World Happiness Report’, together they will ensure that all visitors will be embraced and welcomed with warmth, style and care.

Both countries bring a load of experience in hosting, each have hosted numerous major international sport events and promise the handball family that the Men’s EHF EURO in 2022 or 2024 will be an exceptional event while highlighting the strength of small nations coming together.

With both countries among the most innovative in the world, the Men’s EHF EURO 2022/2024 in Denmark and Switzerland promises to offer a unique fan experience at an event which will be at the forefront of digital technology and innovation in all venues and host cities.



“The future of our sport lies in all our members, big and small,” said Per Bertelsen, President of the Danish Handball Association. “The Danish Handball Association is committed to ensuring the further expansion of our sport throughout Europe; by hosting either the Men’s EHF EURO 2022 or 2024 together with Switzerland we strongly believe that this is a unique opportunity to lead the European handball family into a new era.”

Ulrich Rubeli, President of the Swiss Handball Federation, is equally looking forward to the future. “We are very proud to partner with Denmark in bidding for the Men’s EHF EURO 2022 or 2024,” he said. “We are confident that with our combined experience in organising major sport events we will deliver a fantastic handball championship, setting the standards of the future.”

The bid has also received full support and endorsements from their political partners, including Mette Bock, the Danish Minister for Culture, who said: “You can be assured of not only my Government’s full support, but also of my personal promise to ensure that the Men’s EHF EURO 2022/2024 will be guaranteed the stature and commitment that such an important event deserves."
