The social side of handball: last week in review

The long-lasting wait for premium quality handball finally came to an end last week, as the VELUX EHF Champions League returned after a break of more than three months. There was something for everyone on the menu: spectacular debuts, emotional comebacks, stunning goals and a family reunion yet to be seen in handball.

ehfCL.com reviews the best moments from last week’s action, both on court and off, all through the eyes of social media.

Happiness is all around

We see you, Mikkel! You too, Uwe! And we were also as happy as you for the new season’s throw-off. PSG stormed Motor in the first game of the season, enjoying a commanding 35:29 win.

Top goalkeeper or top goal scorer?

PSG’s victory brings us to a special performance from Thierry ‘Titi’ Omeyer. After the new rule changes, which made substituting the goalkeeper easier, goalkeepers have a clearer chance to score. However, even in this situation, a hat-trick from a goalkeeper seems like an absurd theory. Not for the 41-year old French veteran, who took advantage of Motor’s risky approach and scored three times.

The Dujshebaev premiere

A flurry of injuries saw a depleted PGE Vive Kielce travel to Veszprém with only 12 players. The situation forced the Polish champions to recall left back Daniel Dujshebaev from his loan to RK Celje Pivovarna Lasko. The 21-year-old Spaniard scored twice for his new team and played alongside his brother, Alex, while their father, Talant, was coaching.

Fancy a beauty?

We were rewarded for our patience waiting for the Champions League to return, being treated to many great goals in the opening clashes. Beauties like the ones scored by Teemu Tamminen, Manuel Strlek and Carlos Ruesga made the cut among the best of the round.

Off the court: Let’s do it, Cristina!

“Let’s Do It, Romania” is one of the biggest NGO-backed projects in Romania, with the purpose of bringing the country to a zero-waste situation. The project enlisted several high-profile figures in Romania, including one of the top handball players in the world, Cristina Neagu. The CSM Bucuresti superstar spent her Saturday morning helping clean the Vacaresti Delta, a natural delta in the Romanian capital.
