The social side of handball: last week in review

There were 22 games in the Women’s and the VELUX EHF Champions League last week. They provided us with a lot of not-to-be-missed social media posts.

The menu for this week’s social media review is rich, and we have something for everybody’s appetite.

Revenge is sweet for Corrales

Uwe Gensheimer is one of the most technically gifted players in the VELUX EHF Champions League. He put those credentials into use during a practice session three weeks ago when he scored a beautiful penalty against Rodrigo Corrales. The Spanish goalkeeper requested for the footage to be deleted, did not achieve that, but got his revenge last week, when he managed to save another shot from the German ace.

The Palicka effect

Last week we had Mikael Appelgren’s training sessions. This time we take a more nonchalant approach from his teammate, Andreas Palicka. The Löwen goalkeeper suffered the Photoshop treatment to a photo taken during the game against IFK Kristianstad. Everybody loves the rubber duck, right?

Another handball perspective

Handball is played for the fans and an electric atmosphere is always credited by players to have helped win a game. It was also the case in Kielce, where the home side broke Vardar’s four-game winning streak after leading the whole game, 31:27. The Polish champions have also produced a beautiful video that shows another perspective on one of the most important games of the week in the VELUX EHF Champions League.

Raw emotion for the International Day of the Girl Child

There are beautiful shots taken by photographers during handball games, but there are also shots that transcend the game and show raw emotion. Like this one taken before the game that saw MOL-Pick Szeged take an exciting win against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.

On 11 October the International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated. The VELUX EHF Champions League and its charity partner, Plan International, drew worldwide attention to the fact that girls often do not have the same chances as boys, and that they are often prevented from exercising their rights. The centre circles turned pink on all courts for the Round 5 matches to remind everybody of this great cause.

A big, happy family

There are players from seven different countries and three different continents in Dinamo’s roster. But this does not mean that cultural differences or language barriers are a deal breaker in the Romanian locker room. Strength, grit and joy are the feelings that come out from this picture, taken after one of Dinamo’s most important wins of the last decade, 24:21, against Orlen Wisla Plock, that brought the Romanian side to the top of the table.

A goal for everybody

Tricky shots, in-flight masterpieces and powerful throws, we have it all this week! There is something for everybody here, including handball purists, who will certainly appreciate David Balaguer’s out-of-the-box thinking.

Buzzer-beater from Aniko Kovacsics

The beauty and electric nature of handball can easily be compiled in the video below. It was a defining moment for FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria’s season, as Aniko Kovacsics used her intelligence and handball IQ to intercept the ball, run directly to the opponent’s goal and put the ball past the shot stopper to bring the Hungarian team a 27:26 win against Vipers Kristiansand.
