Berlin pick up second consecutive win in Hungary

After defeating Saint-Raphaël last weekend, Füchse Berlin followed up with an away win in Balatonfüred tonight. The hungarian team may have played at their maximum in the first half, being down only by two at the break, the German side were too strong defensively in the second half, allowing them to go clear.

  • This was Berlin’s second straight win the EHF Cup Group Phase
  • With this win, Berlin are now the lone leaders of Group A while Balatonfüredi have yet to earn a point
  • Top scorer was Balatonfüredi’s Dominik Mathe with 9 goals while Bjarki Mar Elisson netted seven times for Berlin

GROUP A

Balatonfüredi KSE (HUN) vs Füchse Berlin (GER) 24:29 (14:16)

Berlin were quickly into their game, displaying an efficient defence and always looking to set up a fast-break. Left-winger Bjarki Mar Elisson was their main asset as the Icelander gave his team the first proper advantage of the game after five minutes (4:1).

The home side managed not to get overrun too soon, staying three or four goals behind the whole first half, with winger Dominik Mathe scoring six in the first half alone. If they were experiencing defensive problems, Balatonfüred were finally finding solutions in attack and, at half-time, they could still hope for a comeback (16:14).

But Berlin started the second half just as they had started the first, with Elisson and Drux adding goals to the score board while Silvio Heinevetter was making important saves, the visitors were ahead by six just fifteen minutes after the break (24:18).

They had only conceded two goals in fifteen minutes, as proof of their defensive efficiency. The gap was bigger still seven minutes later, when Fabian Wiede gave Berlin an eight-goal advantage (28:20) with the end in sight.

Balatonfüredi still did their best in front of their home fans but only managed to reduce their opponents’ advantage to five when the final buzzer rang.
