Vujovic-inspired Tatabanya complete comeback for second win in a row

In the first of two Men’s EHF Cup matches today TSV Hannover-Burgdorf looked like the favourites early on, taking a 12:8 lead, but Grundfos Tatabanya KC put on a superb defensive performance in the second half, restricting the German side to just nine goals as they won 28:25.

The result means that the Hungarian jumped over Hannover in the group rankings, two points behind leaders Nexe, who are flawless after three rounds.

  • Montenegrin left wing Milos Vujovic was Tatabanya’s best scorer, with seven goals
  • The two sides will meet again in Hannover next Sunday (3 March)
  • Hannover’s Morten Olsen and Timo Kastening scored nine goals in the first half, but were silenced to just one goal between them in the second

GROUP B
Grundfos Tatabanya KC (HUN) vs TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (GER) 28:25 (16:16)

After Croatian side RK Nexe won their third group game in a row yesterday to continue their perfect record, it became apparent that this tie was going to hold the utmost importance in deciding which team will have the first chance to earn the second place which could see them proceed into the quarter-finals.

Tatabanya came into this match following a straightforward win against Rabotnik in their previous encounter but found themselves in early trouble early on as Hannover jumped to a 3:0 lead.

Right wing Timo Kastening and playmaker Morten Olsen were unstoppable for the German side, scoring five and four goals respectively as their side jumped to a 10:6 lead after 14 minutes.

Following that disappointing start, Tatabanya started to mount a comeback. With Milos Vujovic and Adam Juhasz scoring five goals apiece, the hosts managed a 6:2 run to tie the game, as the deadlock was not broken after 30 minutes, 16:16.

It was a totally different second half though as Tatabanya slowed the rhythm which worked wonders for the Hungarian team, as they jumped to a 22:19 lead, after a 4:1 run which saw the German side’s shooting efficiency fail from 68% to 49% and the Hungarians allowed no chance for Hannover to complete their own comeback, as Tatabanya stayed firm and conceded just nine goals in the second half, to end with a 28:25 win.

The two sides will meet again next Sunday (3 March), when the German side will try and tie Tatabanya in the rankings.
